Gompers on Labor Day

Dear Neighbor,

WHAT DOES LABOR WANT?

Samuel Gompers was the first president of the AFL-CIO, serving for almost 40 years.

He once gave a very long speech about "What Does Labor Want?" but he also gave a short summary:

"What does labor want?  We want more school houses and less jails; more books and less arsenals; more learning and less vice; more constant work and less crime; more leisure and less greed; more justice and less revenge; in fact, more of the opportunities to cultivate our better natures."

A broad view of the labor movement's goals!  It reminds me of Bread and Roses!

DON'T FORGET SOUP/SALAD PARTY SEPTEMBER 14!

Our traditional winter soup party changed last year to a salad party so we could be outdoors (weather permitting).

Please plan to join friends and supporters on Saturday, September 14 for salad and maybe soup.  Thanks to the hospitality of residents at Cornerstone Cohousing in Cambridge, we'll gather at 175 Richdale Avenue, between Walden and Raymond, from 5 to 8 pm.

For public transit, there's the Porter Square T stop, and buses 83 and 77.

SONG OF THE DAY: Bread and Roses

This version by Women of the World.  "Bread and Roses" is a political slogan attributed to speeches by American activists, Helen Todd, and later, Rose Schneiderman, which inspired a poem by James Oppenhain published in 1911. It was set to music by various composers, having been rediscovered after WWII. This version is based on the melody written by Margarita Mimi Baez Fariña in 1974. Coming later this week: Good News!!!

Happy Labor Day!
